A Silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Argent, on a fess Azure between two bars that to chief of the second and that to base Gules, a saltire Argent (Smoke).  Attached below the shield is a Silver scroll inscribed “NOUS SOMMES PRETS” in Red letters. 

The organization's honorable heritage is shown by the silver saltire, taken from the coat of arms of Nova Scotia, which alludes to the Regiment's home area whose early inhabitants were from Nova Scotia. The bar in chief is blue for Infantry service in World War I and the bar in base is red for Artillery service in World War II. 

The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 199th Infantry Regiment on 1 May 1952.  It was rescinded (cancelled) on 4 August 1960.  It was reinstated and redesignated for the 199th Regiment with the description and symbolism revised on 3 July 1997.  It was amended to update the description and correct the motto on 29 June 2016.  The distinctive unit insignia was amended to update the description 22 June 2023.
